A TRIP TO MAKERERE UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

On 26th July, we went on our trip to Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo (MUARIK). When we were at the farm we learnt about systems of farming like apiculture/beekeeping, curniculture/rabbit keeping, cattle keeping and poultry keeping.

In apiculture, we learnt the types of bees including worker bees and queen bees. We were told the types of hives too and they are modern bee hives and local bee hives. We were also taken to the laboratory to see other things like venom treating cancer, royal jelly that is only eaten by Queen Bee and we also saw wax for making candles.

In aquaculture, we were taught the types of fish and they include Tilapia fish, Lungfish, mudfish and Nile perch. However, in the pond, they had mudfish and Nile-tilapia fish.

In curniculture, we were taught how rabbits are kept and told examples of rabbits that include; New Zealand white, chinchilla rabbits and California rabbits, the diseases of rabbits like ear canker, coccidiosis, feeds of rabbits like carrots, pellets, cabbage and spinach.

Cattle keeping was the last area we looked at, I was advised how to manage cattle by doing the following things, feeding cattle well, providing them with water and giving them a feeder. We also learnt the types of grazing cattle like zero grazing, tethering, and paddock grazing however at the farm they were using zero grazing and this is where cattle is provided food and water from the habitat. We saw a milking machine and how it works.

It was an amazing trip to all P. 6 students.
