At Taibah International School, our poultry business as the Senior Six Entrepreneurship class has been an exciting educational initiative that has taught us about agriculture, entrepreneurship and sustainability. This project having been launched on 5th June, 2024, focused on raising chicken for both educational benefits and profit earnings through sales. The type of chicken we mainly engaged in were the broilers because of their valuable meat.
The poultry business project provided hands-on learning experiences, allowing us to partake in animal husbandry, budgeting and marketing. We also gained practical skills in feeding, health monitoring, record-keeping, fostering teamwork and responsibility.
Our project not only benefited the Entrepreneurship class but also the school community. The nutritious meat produced was sold to the parents and the staff which promoted healthy eating. Additionally, one of the Taibah C’s which is “concern for the community”, was exercised as we ensured proper hygiene and maintenance of the chicken coop to prevent any sanitary inconveniences.
Despite the positive results and achievements reaped from the success of the poultry project, there were several challenges faced while running it. One of the challenges faced was managing the health of the birds as they were prone to illness, there was also a challenge of attacks from wild animals as well as limited labour to attend to the chicken. We however learnt to develop solutions to these issues and this enhanced our problem-solving skills.
Therefore, we’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the school administration who provided us with the permission and space to establish the business project, to our loving parents who supported us financially and to our dear teachers, Tr. Kasule Lawrence, Tr. Ssemuwemba Moses and Tr. Lubwama Thomas who guided us and brought the project to life through their continuous support and efforts.
Finally, we can positively conclude that our school poultry business project has been a valuable learning tool which has equipped us with essential skills while positively impacting our community. As entrepreneurship students, we are now committed to fostering sustainability and responsibility as we grow.
