MY ‘LINES AND BARS’ EXPERIENCE

By Ciara Keinembabazi

Being a part of the Poetry Slam was one of the most amazing things that have ever happened to me. During my time there, I became familiar with the readers and writers’ club members. In the days before 29th June, everyone became earnest with practice - day and night but it was stressful. But thanks to our poetry coaches [Tr. Obed, Tr. Daniel and Lus the poet] reminded us that poetry is something to enjoy and have fun while expressing oneself. On the competition day, all the poets were filled with various emotions, but I was excited and also kind of nervous.  Adding insult to injury, my nervousness doubled with the badges my eyes saw; Gayaza High School, Kawempe Muslim School, SPENA, Seeta High School, Uganda Martyrs Namugongo et cetera. Most students had nice and touching poems appreciated by both the audience and judges who judged with piercing intimidating eyes but turned out to be friendly and nice after announcing the winners. Despite all the outstanding performances, Taibah International School still merged as the winners represented by Kirabo Martha, Namyalo Eleanor and Rhesa Obbo who were branded as the slam masters of the 7th Annual Poetry Slam 2024 with the theme being “In Your Head”. I and the other poets were rewarded with certificates for participation. To close off the day, we interacted with other contestants from other schools and even made new friends. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
