The Impact of Peer Tutoring: A Journey of Growth and Connection

In 2024, I embarked on an exciting journey as a peer tutor for a vibrant group of 33 students beginning their high school adventure. This experience has been both enriching and rewarding as we navigated the transition into high school together.

From the moment the students arrived, the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and enthusiasm. I introduced them to the Taibah Five C's—Confidence, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Care for Community, and Communication. It was clear that these principles would be central to our journey. They helped us establish a strong foundation for our interactions and learning.

We began by focusing on building confidence and fostering creativity. I encouraged students to embrace their unique talents and express themselves through various activities. Whether it was through classroom presentations, creative projects, or participating in theme assemblies, the students had numerous opportunities to shine and gain confidence in their abilities.

Understanding the importance of community, we worked on cultivating a sense of belonging and mutual support. Students were assigned roles in class and encouraged to contribute to domestic work, which helped them develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork. Communication was key, and we regularly discussed their experiences and challenges, ensuring that everyone felt heard and valued.

One of the highlights of our time together is the opportunity for students to share their experiences from their previous schools. They reminisced about their primary school years, sharing their grades and personal stories. These moments of reflection allowed us to build connections and understand each other's backgrounds better.

The mentorship aspect of peer tutoring was particularly meaningful. I worked closely with students like Isabel, Isaiah, Hailey, Aaliya Emmanuel (class president) and more, to provide guidance and support. The close-knit relationship we developed felt like a family bond. We focused on listening to each other, monitoring academic progress, and addressing health and well-being concerns.

Maintaining open communication with parents was also crucial. By keeping parents informed and involved, we ensured that students received the support they needed both at school and at home.

As we moved through the two terms, the bond between us grew stronger. The experience of peer tutoring has been a journey of mutual growth and learning. Together, we navigated the challenges of high school, celebrated successes, and built a supportive and collaborative environment.

Reflecting on this journey, I am proud of the progress we have made. The principles of the Taibah Five C's have guided us, and the connections we have forged will continue to impact our lives positively. Being a peer tutor has not only allowed me to support my fellow students but has also enriched my own life with invaluable lessons and experiences.
